There are numerous myths surrounding whether or not used networking equipment is reliable and quality gear. The majority of these myths are based upon the premise that something must be wrong with it if it is being sold for such an affordable price. Fortunately, these myths are myths and here we dispel them:
Myth #1: Used Network Equipment is Not Quality Equipment
Although this equipment has been pre-owned, this simply means that it has been tested and proven to work. Additionally, you can purchase equipment that has been used and refurbished back to its original state. The outside may not look new, but the inside components certainly are.
Myth #2: Maintenance is Not Available on Used Equipment
This is also untrue. Many resellers partner with the equipment's actual manufacturer and have access to those company's repair services. Additionally, most used equipment comes with a 30-day warranty, with the option of purchasing an extended warranty.
Myth #3: Network Equipment must be purchased on an "as is basis"
Again, most refurbished, recertified and pre-owned network equipment resellers offer 30-day replacement warranties. This means that if something should go wrong with the equipment, they will replace it for you. You may also be able to get it repaired.
Myth #4: Manufacturers Do Not Support Used Gear
As long as you purchase your network equipment from a certified reseller, you will be able to purchase support on your networking equipment. This means that you will be able to obtain support services on any equipment that you purchase should it malfunction and need repair.
Myth #5: Third Party Components Invalidates Warranties
Many resellers do utilize third party components in their used networking equipment including memory, GBICs and cables. Although you may need to rely on the company you purchased the third party components from, the use of these components do not invalidate the equipments warranty.
Myth #6: Used Networking Equipment is Fake or Fraudulent
As long as you purchase your used networking equipment from a reputable seller, you do not need to worry about receiving fraudulent or fake equipment. There are many certified resellers of name brand networking equipment and when you purchase from these companies you are ensuring that your equipment is the real deal.
Myth #7: The IOS is transferable on Networking Equipment and you do not have to purchase a new one.
This is untrue. Used products do not have a valid software license, so you will be required to purchase a new software license from either the manufacturer or an authorized dealer. This is required in order to use the equipment you purchase.
