Most Common: What are drivers and why do I need them?
By far, this is the most common question we receive from customers. On most PCs & Laptops sold, we give the customer the option of choosing whether or not to have the operating system (OS) pre-installed by us. One of the biggest benefits of having us install the OS is that we include all drivers necessary for the computer to function as it should. These drivers are software that tell your OS what kind of video card, sound card, network card, etc.. are installed. Without drivers the OS does not know how to talk to these important hardware pieces and will make it appear that there is a hardware problem with the computer. Drivers are always available on the Original Equipment Manfucaturer's (OEM) website. We've included the links for you below.
Most Common: What are the first things I should do when I receive my computer/laptop?
We highly recommend that you do the following with your computer when you first receive it.
  • Install OS: If you did not choose our pre-installtion service, you will have to install an Operating System
  • Install Latest Drivers: If you did not choose our pre-installation service, you will have to install the latest drivers for your hardware. Refer to the drivers question above for more information.
  • Install Latest Service Packs: It is very important that you install the latest OS service packs before you start using your PC. Service packs are available on Microsoft's website, www.microsoft.com.
  • Purchase & Install Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware / Firewall Software: Before using your PC on the internet, we highly, highly recommend that you choose a good anti-virus / anti-spyware / firewall software and install it on your system. A good one that we use at Teksavers is ZoneAlarm: Internet Security Suite from CheckPoint. Available at: www.zonealarm.com
  • Surge Protection: Choose a good surge protector to protect your system from electrical surges.
  • Online Backup: If your data is critical, we recommend using an online data backup service such as Carbonite, available at www.carbonite.com
Sound is not working.
The first thing to check is to make sure that your speakers are powered on and connected correctly. Check to make sure the speaker cable is plugged into the right port on the back of the computer. A common mistake is to connect the speaker cable into the microphone port which is not correct. Most computers have an icon on the sound port that looks like a pair of headphones and is almost always green in color. This is the correct port. More commonly however, is that your sound driver is not installed or is not functioning correctly. Refer to the first question above that helps you deal with driver issues. We recommend using our pre-installation service when purchasing your computer to avoid driver issues.

Video doesn't seem right, the resolution is very low quality.
The most common problem with video has to do with the incorrect video driver or the lack of drivers being installed. Refer to the first question above that helps you deal with driver issues. Once the correct driver has been installed, you will be able to increase your resolution using the Display icon found in the Control Panel of all Windows operating systems. We recommend using our pre-installation service when purchasing your computer to avoid driver issues.

I cannot connect to the Internet, the network port does not seem to be working.
The most common problem with network connectivity has to do with the incorrect network driver or the lack of drivers being installed. Refer to the first question above that helps you deal with driver issues. We recommend using our pre-installation service when purchasing your computer to avoid driver issues.

The CDROM / Optical Drive is not reading any discs.
Ocassionally a hardware problem with the optical drive may occur. If you are having problems reading compact discs or DVDs please first check to make sure the discs are not scratched or try a couple of CDs to verify that it is indeed the optical drive with the problem. If you are trying to read DVDs make sure your optical drive is capable of reading DVDs (DVDROM is required). We will replace any optical drive within the warranty period free of charge. This warranty applies to any other hardware problem that may arise.

My computer is constantly re-booting and will not completely boot to Windows.
While this problem may be caused by hardware, it is more commonly caused by faulty or incorrect drivers being installed. If you are experiencing this problem or your computer is booting to a blue screen (commonly referred to as the blue screen of death), we recommend that you re-install the operating system completely (backup your files if the system will allow you). We recommend that you format your hard drive when given the option during installation to ensure that you are starting fresh and are not affected by corrupted files that are currently on your computer. Once you have re-installed the OS, make sure you install the correct drivers for your hardware (see driver question above). We recommend using our pre-installation service when purchasing your computer to avoid driver issues.

I just received my computer system and it came pre-loaded with Windows 2000. What is the administrator password?
If your system includes a Windows 2000 COA and Teksavers pre-installed Windows 2000, when you first start your system you will receive a login message. The default username is: Administrator. The default password has been left blank during installation. From the login screen simply leave the password field blank and press Enter to access your system.
